MoonPay has expanded its PayBox payment vault to xAI’s Grok assistant, the company announced on August 31, 2026. The integration is the third deployment of PayBox after launches with ChatGPT and Claude in July. It allows Grok users to prepare and execute crypto transactions, DeFi actions and online purchases through a conversational interface, with MoonPay providing the authorization and credential control layer.
PayBox does not become natively embedded in Grok by default. Users must add and authorize a custom Model Context Protocol connector. Grok translates natural-language requests into proposed actions, while PayBox supplies permission controls and credentials needed to complete them. MoonPay positions the product as a self-custodial payment vault rather than making the AI assistant itself a wallet, broker, lender or payment provider.
Supported blockchain networks include Solana and several EVM-compatible environments such as Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Arbitrum, Hyperliquid, Tempo and Robinhood Chain. MoonPay says users can ask Grok to onramp fiat into a stablecoin, swap tokens, bridge assets, supply crypto to a lending market or book flights and restaurant reservations. One example describes buying PYUSD, swapping it into SOL, and earning on USDC through Kamino. However, Kamino functionality is not available in the United States, United Kingdom, European Union and Australia, and availability of other actions may depend on jurisdiction and connected platforms.
PayBox offers two permission modes. Always Ask requires mandatory signing via biometric passkey for every individual transaction. Autonomous allows the AI to operate within predefined spending limits. MoonPay says single-action approvals expire after use so they cannot be replayed. The company also notes that autonomous mode moves the approval decision from each transaction to the design of the grant. Its terms state that Launchpad does not assess the agent’s intent, logic, frequency or correctness and has no obligation to detect an unintended operation or abnormal behaviour.
Security relies on multiparty computation and trusted execution environments based on technology from Sodot, a threshold cryptography firm MoonPay acquired in early 2026. According to MoonPay, the infrastructure secures more than $50 billion in assets across over 10 million wallets. No single party holds a complete private key. For card transactions, PayBox routes through Visa’s agentic commerce protocol, preventing the AI from storing bank card numbers. Agent-to-agent transfers use the x402 standard. The x402 network recorded 8.7 million transfers in one August week carrying only $367,950, an average of roughly four cents per transaction.
The launch adds distribution rather than proof of safe autonomy. Ivan Soto-Wright, CEO and founder of MoonPay, said: "AI is quickly becoming the interface through which people navigate the internet, and payments need to work wherever those conversations happen." MoonPay serves more than 30 million customers across 180 countries and holds a New York BitLicense and EU MiCA authorizations, though the company’s terms identify PayBox itself as an unregulated credential control plane separate from regulated MoonPay services.
