Ripple has moved quantum security from a theoretical concern to a formal engineering roadmap, preparing the XRP Ledger for a future “Q-Day” when quantum computers could break existing wallet cryptography. The company’s senior director of engineering, Ayo Akinyele, said in late August 2026 that wallets, settlement, and institutional rails must evolve before such a machine can reconstruct private keys from public data.
The plan has four stages. Phase 1 is an emergency migration path allowing users to move to quantum-safe accounts without exposing current keys. Phase 2 tests NIST-recommended ML-DSA algorithms, also known as Dilithium, on AlphaNet in the first half of 2026. Later in 2026, old and new signature schemes will run side by side on development and test networks. The final stage targets a mainnet code amendment by 2028 for native post-quantum signatures, pending independent validator coordination.
Akinyele stressed the challenge is larger than swapping algorithms. Post-quantum signatures can be much larger, raising storage, bandwidth, and throughput costs. Ripple is working with Project Eleven to benchmark hybrid signing and custody tools against real XRPL workloads. The ledger’s existing key-rotation feature is a structural advantage because account owners can rotate keys without changing the addresses counterparties already trust.
Ripple also cited an audit figure showing only about 0.03% of XRP supply sits in dormant accounts with public keys already visible on-chain, limiting immediate exposure. The company said AI is accelerating cryptography research and, together with quantum computing, pushing finance toward always-on rails that can support autonomous agentic payments. Bitcoin and Ethereum teams published their own migration discussions in the same week, framing the issue as an industry-wide race.
For traders, XRP remains rangebound. The token has been consolidating between $1.34 and $1.40, with the seven-day print down about 10% while the monthly trend stays positive. A hold above $1.35 could open a retest of $1.45–$1.50, while a break below $1.30 would weaken structure toward the low $1.20s. The quantum timeline is bullish on paper, but the 2028 target does little for short-term price action.
