Anthropic has released a new toolkit for building conversational shopping and operations assistants on Claude, with Visa and Mastercard named as key ecosystem partners. The company describes the package as a practical blueprint rather than a finished storefront, providing reusable patterns, safety constraints, and sample code for engineering teams.
The release includes two reference designs: a customer-facing shopping agent that can search live catalogs, remember preferences, compare options, build multi-item baskets, and hand off a completed cart to existing checkout; and an internal merchant agent that monitors inventory, flags promotion stock risks, suggests pricing and campaigns, and drafts marketing copy. Anthropic says any internal agent proposal still requires human approval before going live. The company reports that early Claude-based shopping agents have increased basket sizes by as much as 35 percent and conversion by about 60 percent, though those figures have not been independently audited.
Early users and partners include Shopify, Priceline, Accenture, Visa, and Mastercard. Developers can deploy the code through the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry, or Google Cloud Vertex AI. The timing is aimed at holiday planning, and Anthropic is not taking over payments; checkout remains with the retailer or an agentic payments partner. Guardrails are designed to keep prices and products tied to real catalog data and to limit pushy upselling.
In a related move, Mastercard introduced Agent Connect, a single integration for businesses to connect with AI agents, digital platforms, and payment providers. Mastercard also expanded its Agent Suite with tools for product discovery, cart creation, and authorized purchases, while its Agent Pay system lets AI agents make purchases using tokenized credentials and spending rules rather than raw card numbers. Visa’s Intelligent Commerce and Mastercard’s Agent Pay programs issue tokenized credentials and spending limits. Anthropic’s work complements the card networks’ trust and token layer, with Claude supplying the shopping brain while Visa, Mastercard, and merchants handle checkout, tokens, and fraud controls.
