Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, debuted at its annual hardware event on September 9, 2026, hosted by new CEO John Ternus. The device features a 7.6-inch foldable inner display, a 5.4-inch outer display, an under-display camera, a custom nanotexture finish to reduce glare and hide the crease, and a grade 5 aluminum hinge built from more than 100 components. It runs on Apple’s A20 Pro chip and C2 modem, uses Touch ID rather than Face ID, can be unlocked with an Apple Watch, and is priced at $1,999. Apple said the iPhone Duo will ship in October, initially reaching only 28 markets compared with more than 70 markets for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.
The product reveal was overshadowed on social media by Samsung and Duolingo. Samsung, which launched the Galaxy Fold back in 2019, mocked Apple on X within minutes, writing ‘let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers’ and adding: ‘It’s feeling very familiar. Is this a Sims sequel?’ and ‘Not the bed side clock. It’s giving groundhog day.’ Samsung also brought Duolingo into the conversation, posting an apology with the hashtag #Solidarity and suggesting Apple had copied the Duo name from Duolingo’s green owl mascot. Duolingo responded: ‘they named a phone after me and made it bend over,’ and later compared prices: ‘iPhone Duo: $1999. Duo on your iPhone: free.’ Duolingo’s stock fell 4.88% on the day, Apple shares dipped 0.28%, and Samsung’s Korean-listed shares slipped 0.19%.
Google Trends data showed a sharp rise in global interest. Searches for ‘foldable smartphone’ rose 450% over the preceding 24 hours and were up 1,050% compared with the same time the prior week. Worldwide search interest hit a peak index of 100 around the announcement, then cooled to the 50–60 range before drifting into the 30s by midday. China ranked first in regional search interest, followed by Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and Taiwan. Breakout queries included ‘iPhone Duo release date,’ ‘iPhone Duo case,’ ‘iPhone 18 Duo,’ and terms related to Motorola’s upcoming foldable phone.
Industry analysts said the launch marks a turning point for the foldable segment. IDC’s Francisco Jeronimo said Apple’s entry should boost category awareness and consumer interest even though foldables remain niche. IDC projects the global foldables market will grow 30% in 2026, largely due to Apple’s entry, with average selling prices roughly three times higher than standard smartphones. Counterpoint Research analyst Gerrit Schneemann said early iPhone Duo sales will almost certainly be constrained by limited supply rather than limited demand, meaning early buyers should expect long wait times. The rollout arrives as Apple competes with existing foldable devices from Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, and other Android makers.
