The Algorand Foundation has appointed William Herkelrath as its new chief executive officer, effective Aug. 31, in a leadership change announced on Sept. 9. Herkelrath succeeds Staci Warden, who led the organization for nearly five years and described the transition as the next chapter for the layer-1 network.
The Delaware-based foundation said the move is part of a broader push to expand institutional business and prepare Algorand for long-term risks, particularly from quantum computing. Herkelrath joins from K3 Labs, an AI-first automation platform he co-founded, and previously held leadership roles at Chainlink and Curv. His background spans artificial intelligence, enterprise software, institutional finance, data infrastructure, custody, and automation.
“I joined Algorand because they are a leader in decentralized post-quantum cryptography,” Herkelrath said. “With both AI and quantum threats on the horizon, Algorand has a unique opportunity to become a trusted partner in bringing verifiable and trusted security to a wide variety of institutions.”
Algorand has emphasized quantum readiness for years. The foundation states that post-quantum accounts are live in production using Falcon-1024, a lattice-based signature system, and that the v42 consensus upgrade included support for post-quantum signatures. The network was also cited more than 30 times in Google’s Quantum AI paper as a key innovator. Herkelrath noted that Algorand built for a quantum-resilient world before many others recognized the risk, with post-quantum accounts already running in production rather than sitting on a roadmap.
Alongside the CEO transition, Algorand announced board changes. Herkelrath and Alex Fowler, chief strategy officer at Nexus Laboratories, are joining the board, while Rebecca Rettig and Michael Mosier are departing. The existing leadership team remains in place as the foundation extends its institutional finance push. Algorand has previously partnered with Microsoft and CDP Venture Capital’s Frontech accelerator, and the network is used for payments, asset tokenization, and digital identity.
Warden framed the handoff positively. “Leading the Algorand Foundation has been one of the great privileges of my career,” she said. “William brings the vision and experience to lead Algorand through its next chapter.”
Founded by cryptographer and MIT professor Silvio Micali, Algorand faces heavy competition from Ethereum, Solana, and Bitcoin. The foundation is betting that its post-quantum security work and institutional focus can differentiate the network, although adoption may take time.
