Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan declared on September 17, 2026, that tokenization has become impossible to ignore, arguing the financial world is now moving onchain in a multi-year transformation rather than a short-term trade. His comments landed on a day when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission created a regulated pathway for tokenized stocks, S&P Global agreed to acquire smart-contract security leader OpenZeppelin, and DeFi assets rallied.
Hougan reinforced his view by comparing tokenization's current stage to the early artificial-intelligence boom. He noted that ChatGPT launched in November 2022 while NVIDIA traded around $16. One year later the stock had climbed 176 percent to $46, and NVIDIA now trades near $219. For Hougan, the lesson is that recognizing a megatrend early does not mean the opportunity has passed. He applied the same logic to tokenization, writing: "This is a multi-year transformation of how finance works. If it plays out as I think it will, there is plenty of upside ahead."
The SEC's new Innovation Exemption allows certain platforms, called Tokenized Securities Venues, to facilitate trading of actual tokenized U.S. equities on public blockchains. The framework covers tokenized NMS stocks that preserve shareholder rights such as dividends and voting, while synthetic products that merely track stock prices remain excluded. Issuers retain a 30-day window to object to third-party tokenization. The relief is temporary, lasting up to five years, and includes limits on the number of securities and daily trading volume each venue may handle.
Meanwhile, S&P Global's agreement to acquire OpenZeppelin places one of crypto's leading smart-contract security firms inside a major traditional ratings house. OpenZeppelin's tools and standards are widely used across DeFi protocols, stablecoins and tokenized funds. The company says its contracts have facilitated more than $37 trillion in transferred value and completed more than 900 security engagements. The deal gives S&P a technical layer for assessing tokenized assets.
Hougan pointed to the convergence of regulatory clarity, institutional infrastructure and rising onchain activity as evidence that tokenization has crossed from speculation into accepted megatrend status. He did not cite specific percentage moves in DeFi, only describing the sector as "ripping" on the day the SEC and S&P announcements landed. His NVIDIA parallel is not a direct price forecast, but a framework for understanding how blockchain-based financial rails may become a long-duration market transition as traditional financial firms and infrastructure providers enter the sector.
