Key takeaways:

  • Coinbase's Pokémon card tease signals deeper push into tokenized real-world assets, not just crypto trading.
  • Collector Crypt's $70M Pokémon sales validate demand, but Coinbase's custody details remain unclear.
  • Watch Base tokenized stock volumes and Hyperliquid integration as Coinbase's ecosystem strategy gains traction.

Coinbase has teased a new feature that would let users open physical Pokémon trading card packs directly from their phones. The company previewed the product on Sept. 28, saying users would be able to “rip packs” and that every pull would be backed by a real, physical card, which could be kept in a vault or shipped to its owner.

In its announcement, Coinbase did not provide a launch date beyond saying the feature was coming “soon.” The company replied “you get it” to a user who described the offering as “pokemon packs on the chain,” but it has not disclosed which Pokémon sets will be available, how packs will be priced, where physical cards will be stored, or which markets will have initial access. It also has not identified a blockchain or said whether card ownership will be represented through tokens.

The move aligns with Coinbase’s “Everything Exchange” strategy, outlined in June, to combine crypto, equities, derivatives, prediction markets and other financial products in one ecosystem. Coinbase has already launched tokenized U.S. stocks on Base. The first batch, including Apple, Nvidia, Meta and Alphabet, generated $227.7 million in decentralized exchange volume in its first month. A second batch added Amazon, Microsoft, Strategy, SanDisk, SpaceX and Tesla, and by Sept. 12 Base-based tokenized stocks reached $100 million in daily DEX volume, with 30-day volume at $730.9 million.

Physical Pokémon cards have already found an onchain market through platforms such as Collector Crypt, Courtyard, Phygitals and Beezie. Collector Crypt had facilitated more than $70 million in Pokémon pack sales by September 2025. A newer project, Renaiss, raised $1.5 million in June to build trading-card infrastructure. Coinbase’s teaser points to a similar model, but the company has not said who will custody the cards, handle authentication or shipping, or whether users will be able to trade individual pulls after opening packs.

The teaser follows a broader expansion of Coinbase’s self-custody product, which was restored under the Coinbase Wallet name in September and now supports multichain trading, perpetual futures, prediction markets and tokenized stocks, including more than 290 perpetual markets supplied through Hyperliquid for eligible users.
