Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan has renewed speculation about a native cryptocurrency token after discussing an on-chain asset with “real programmable utility” during TOKEN2049 in Singapore on October 7, 2026. The remarks, made in a fireside conversation with Balaji Srinivasan, did not confirm a token launch, airdrop, distribution mechanism, or timeline.
The discussion followed an October 4 social media exchange in which Coplan responded to a post comparing Polymarket’s weekend revenue of approximately $9.9 million with Hyperliquid’s $2.64 million and the fully diluted valuation of its HYPE token. Coplan’s reply stoked expectations that TOKEN2049 could bring a token announcement, but none materialized.
Coplan described the concept as an asset that could provide programmable functionality within Polymarket’s financial ecosystem, comparing it to an ideal form of stock ownership. However, he did not outline ownership rights, revenue arrangements, governance privileges, or technical specifications for the asset.
Polymarket has attracted substantial equity financing alongside the token speculation. Intercontinental Exchange agreed in October 2025 to invest up to $2 billion at an approximate $8 billion valuation, completed an additional $600 million investment in March 2026, and later reports placed the company’s valuation around $15 billion. By August 2026, Polymarket was reportedly seeking about $1 billion at a valuation exceeding $20 billion.
The company’s regulated U.S. operations remain separate from its international platform. Polymarket acquired QCEX in 2025, and the CFTC records July 9, 2025 as the original designation date for QCX LLC, operating as Polymarket US. U.S. users are directed to the regulated domestic platform and cannot trade on the international website.
Although Polymarket’s parent company filed trademark applications for POLY and $POLY in February 2026, and Chief Marketing Officer Matthew Modabber indicated in October 2025 that the company intended to launch a token and airdrop, no token name, ticker, total supply, smart contract address, snapshot date, eligibility criteria, or distribution mechanism has been announced. Polymarket currently uses pUSD, a Polygon-based ERC-20 token backed by USDC, for trading collateral and rewards, but this asset is separate from any potential POLY token.
