Stablecoins are becoming the backbone of a new wave of agentic commerce, according to a report by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis. The report, part of its annual Geography of Crypto series, highlights that autonomous AI agents have made more than 138 million crypto payments through x402, a payment protocol incubated by Coinbase and operating on the Base layer-2 network.
The growth trajectory is steep: cumulative payments through x402 on Base rose from roughly 1,500 in mid-2025 to more than 138 million by the third quarter of 2026. Chainalysis says the vast majority of these payments are tiny, with more than 87% falling between a hundredth of a cent and 10 cents. These are precisely the kind of microtransactions that stablecoins can handle efficiently, but traditional card networks cannot.
The report frames agentic commerce as one of crypto's fastest-emerging use cases. Developers are increasingly giving AI agents their own budgets to pay for computing power, live web data, coding tools and other online services. The United States dominates identifiable payment activity for AI model inference, accounting for 88.1% of geographically identifiable wallets, while China-linked wallets represented just 0.1% for that category, though they made up the bulk of spending on security and code-analysis services.
Infrastructure for AI-agent payments is maturing rapidly. Visa, Mastercard and Stripe have moved to support AI-agent payments, Coinbase has launched tools allowing agents to trade and transact and begun letting business customers accept agent payments, and Google has unveiled a dedicated agent-payments protocol. BlackRock's head of digital assets research, Will Su, told Chainalysis the firm is watching the space closely, noting that AI agents could create meaningful demand for frequent, low-value payments around the clock.
Still, Chainalysis and others urge caution. Earlier research from crypto tracing firm TRM suggested that much apparent agent activity on these rails may be scripts or self-dealing rather than genuine autonomous agents. That caveat means raw transaction counts may overstate how much real agentic commerce is occurring, even as the broader direction points toward sustained growth.
