Cypherium unveiled COLOSSUS-X on Thursday, October 22, 2026, a proof-of-work mining architecture designed specifically for AI data center hardware rather than specialized ASIC rigs. The system creates a “compute reservoir” that lets operators route GPU capacity between blockchain mining and AI workloads, depending on which is more profitable at any given moment.
The design is memory-intensive, using a 32 GiB dataset that expands about 10% annually, making memory capacity and bandwidth the main performance factor and reducing the advantage of purpose-built mining equipment. Cypherium says this flexibility helps operators such as Bitdeer, which is running mining alongside a 16-year Anthropic compute deal, fill gaps around contracted AI load. The announcement also noted that Keel, formerly Bitfarms, expects zero mining revenue in Q3 2026 after taking its last sites offline on June 29, underscoring the economic pressure on miners.
Cypherium founder Sky Guo said the initiative aims to turn idle GPU capacity into a revenue-generating asset and monetize and hedge the economics of AI infrastructure. The roadmap includes Proof-of-Useful-Training, allowing miners to secure the Bitcoin network with verifiable AI workloads. Cypherium also introduced the Cypherium Compute Index, an on-chain reference price blending network rental rates, mining economics, and external AI compute market data, intended as a settlement benchmark for perpetual contracts and real-world asset products.
The broader context includes CME Group, which launched compute futures on October 5, 2026, tracking Silicon Data indexes for Nvidia’s H100 and B200 chips. As of October 21, Silicon Data’s H100 neo-cloud reading was $2.86 per GPU-hour, up 10% in seven days, with B200 at $6.14. Cypherium’s compute index is positioned as a decentralized counterpart to those benchmarks. Cypherium’s background includes U.S. Patent No. 12,443,569 B2, granted in October 2025, a Google Cloud case study with Randstad, and an appearance in the Federal Reserve’s FedNow Service Provider Showcase.
