Tokenized Markets Gain Momentum as Institutions Push 24/7 Trading and Custody

Key takeaways:

  • Weekend stock-token volume shows demand, but issuer pushback and thin liquidity remain key 24/7 risks.
  • BNY's tokenized Treasury repo signals structural demand for blockchain settlement beyond crypto speculation.
  • Watch Deutsche Bank's BTC and ETH custody rollout as a gradual catalyst, not immediate demand.

Tokenized financial assets are moving further into mainstream institutional workflows, with new data and high-profile transactions showing demand for around-the-clock trading and faster settlement. According to analysis shared by Entropy's Tom Wan, nearly 60% of stock token trading on Robinhood Chain took place outside regular Wall Street hours. Approximately $532 million in trading volume occurred on weekends alone over a one-month period, underscoring growing investor appetite for stock-linked digital assets beyond conventional exchange schedules.

Traditional US stock markets generally operate from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time on regular trading days, while blockchain-based tokenized assets can support transactions outside those hours depending on platform rules and infrastructure. The Robinhood figures highlight flexibility as a key attraction, though the data does not establish how many individual traders generated the volume or whether weekend activity is increasing consistently over time.

Institutional tokenization also advanced this week. BNY and Citadel Securities completed a triparty repo transaction using a tokenized two-year US Treasury as collateral for overnight financing. The security was recorded on BNY’s private digital ledger and settled within minutes instead of the standard T+1 cycle. Citadel Securities then used the Treasury as collateral to secure overnight financing, demonstrating how tokenized securities can move from settlement into other financial activities quickly. Edwin Mata, co-founder and CEO of Brickken, said the BNY transaction shows how tokenized securities can be used beyond initial issuance and transfer, potentially giving institutions greater flexibility in managing collateral and accessing liquidity.

Deutsche Bank is preparing to launch its digital asset custody service in Germany, with plans to expand into Asia in 2027. The bank intends to support Bitcoin and Ether custody initially, followed by stablecoin transactions, tokenized deposits and blockchain-based securities issuance. JPMorgan has already taken steps in this direction with JPM Coin, its USD-denominated deposit token made available to institutional clients on Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network, in November 2025.

At the same time, equities issuers are raising concerns. Nine US-listed companies, including Broadcom, Verizon and CoreWeave, have objected to tokenized versions of their shares being traded on OKXICE, citing concerns over pricing, liquidity and shareholder rights. These objections could shape how tokenized equity platforms coordinate with listed companies on authorization, ownership records and corporate actions.

In Europe, 24/7 trading is already being tested. During ST GROUP’s IPO on Lise, the first on the platform, 60% of orders were placed outside traditional market hours. Mark Kepeneghian, CEO of Lise, said round-the-clock trading meets real investor demand and called for pan-European market infrastructure that operates around the clock and removes internal borders. The developments collectively point toward tokenized securities, custody and settlement becoming more integrated with established banking networks over the next twelve months.
