Iris Ramaya Au, the ex-girlfriend of notorious crypto entrepreneur Adam Iza, has pleaded guilty to federal tax charges related to her involvement in laundering over $2.6 million gained from Iza’s illegal operations. Iza, known as 'The Godfather' of crypto crime, faces multiple charges including conspiracy and wire fraud, with accusations of orchestrating extensive fraud schemes, including defrauding Meta of $37 million. From 2020 to 2023, Au used shell companies for illicit gains, financing a luxury lifestyle alongside Iza, who reportedly acquired $16 million in cryptocurrency through fraudulent means. Au will be sentenced later this year alongside Iza, whose sentencing is set for June 16, 2024. The revelations pose significant implications for the crypto industry and regulatory scrutiny around illicit activities.
The ongoing criminal cases may contribute to a bearish market sentiment for cryptocurrencies, as news of fraudulent activities and illegal operations often spooks investors.
