A London-based Uber driver, Artur Leal de Oliveira, has been accused of drugging a 35-year-old American tourist and stealing over $123,000 worth of cryptocurrencies, primarily Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). The incident took place in February 2024, when Oliveira allegedly gave the victim a sedative during a ride, then accessed the victim's mobile device using biometrics or passcodes obtained while the victim was unconscious.
The driver reportedly accessed Binance and Trust Wallet accounts and transferred the victim's funds into wallets under his control. Authorities tracked the illicit transfers through blockchain records and arrested Oliveira, recovering some of the stolen funds. Uber confirmed Oliveira had been removed from the platform pending legal proceedings and expressed commitment to rider safety.
This case highlights significant security vulnerabilities faced by crypto holders, particularly those using mobile wallets in insecure or unpredictable environments. It has sparked calls for stronger mobile security education and more stringent background checks for rideshare drivers. Additionally, the event underscores the inherent transparency of blockchain transactions, aiding in law enforcement’s investigation.
The crypto community, alongside the IT sector, has reacted with concern, emphasizing increased awareness and caution when handling digital assets. The incident also adds to a rising list of crypto-oriented crimes affecting travelers and high-net-worth individuals globally, prompting greater emphasis on protective measures for cryptocurrency holders.
