The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) estimates that former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, convicted for orchestrating a massive crypto fraud, may be released on December 14, 2044 — four years earlier than his original 25-year sentence ending in 2049. This reduction is attributed to good conduct credits, time already served, and participation in rehabilitation programs. Bankman-Fried has been in federal custody since August 2023, following the revocation of his bail related to witness tampering problems.
Bankman-Fried’s transfer from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, to the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City occurred in April 2025, with no specific reason provided. He is currently held at FCI Terminal Island, a low-security federal prison in California.
Also, other key figures involved in the FTX collapse have received sentence adjustments: Caroline Ellison, former Alameda Research CEO and prosecution star witness, was sentenced to two years and is expected to be released six months early in May 2026. Co-founder Gary Wang and director of engineering Nishad Singh received time served sentences for their cooperation.
The FTX Recovery Trust announced plans to resume creditor distributions on May 30, 2025, with eligible creditors receiving up to 120% payouts under the approved Chapter 11 reorganization plan. This plan prioritizes repayments to users with claims under $50,000, with approximately 98% receiving 119% of their declared funds.
