David Plouffe, known for his significant roles as a political strategist for former Vice President Kamala Harris's 2024 presidential campaign and Barack Obama's administration, has joined Coinbase's Global Advisory Council. This appointment marks one of Plouffe's initial engagements within the crypto and policy sphere since leaving the Harris campaign. Coinbase announced that Plouffe will collaborate with former lawmakers and industry leaders to guide the exchange on future policies in the U.S. and internationally, including its influence on forthcoming elections.

Plouffe highlighted the political engagement of crypto holders, emphasizing how cryptocurrency could serve as an entry point for broader conversations on economic policies with crypto enthusiasts. His addition comes amid CEO Brian Armstrong's efforts to maintain a politically active posture, including fostering closer ties with the Trump administration and supporting legislative initiatives like the GENIUS stablecoin bill.

The advisory council already includes notable political figures across the spectrum, such as former Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Pat Toomey, and Donald Trump's 2024 co-campaign manager, Chris LaCivita. At Coinbase's State of Crypto Summit, former President Trump delivered a prerecorded message expressing his support for pro-crypto bills and praising the industry's progress.

However, Plouffe's affiliation with the Democratic Party and his historical involvement with controversial government initiatives, notably Operation Chokepoint, have raised questions regarding the neutrality and impact of his role with Coinbase. Industry participants are cautiously observing whether his influence will foster balanced regulatory frameworks or align crypto policies with narrower political interests.
