Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake has proposed the 'Lean Ethereum' initiative, a comprehensive roadmap aimed at future-proofing the network against quantum computing threats while significantly simplifying its technical architecture. Supported by co-founder Vitalik Buterin, the plan targets three core layers: consensus, data, and execution.

The proposal integrates zero-knowledge powered virtual machines to quantum-proof the execution layer, ensuring data verification without content exposure. For the data layer, data availability sampling will reduce storage requirements by validating random block segments instead of full downloads. The consensus layer will adopt a RISC-V framework – a simplified instruction set minimizing attack surfaces and backdoor risks.

This overhaul responds to longstanding developer criticisms of Ethereum's complexity. Buterin had earlier advocated for tech stack simplification, noting in May that excessive development created 'security risks and illusory benefits.' The Lean roadmap aligns with his April call for RISC-V integration to boost network resilience.

Drake emphasized the urgency, stating: 'We stand at the dawn of a new era... How does Ethereum marry extreme performance with uncompromising security?' While implementation timelines remain undefined, the proposal marks Ethereum's next evolutionary phase post-Merge, prioritizing quantum resilience and accessibility.
