New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed Executive Order 57 on October 14, 2025, creating the Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain Technology, the first municipal agency in the United States dedicated to cryptocurrency and blockchain innovation. The office will operate within the mayor's office and be led by Moises Rendon, a former digital assets and blockchain policy advisor who has served in the NYC Office of Innovation and Technology since 2024. Rendon will report to the city's chief technology officer and will first assemble a commission of digital asset leaders to guide the office's work.
Mayor Adams stated on X, "Our first-in-the-nation Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain will help make us the global capital of digital assets. This new mayoral office is going to help us stay ahead of the curve, grow our economy, and attract world-class talent." The office aims to support the growth of digital assets and blockchain in NYC, encourage investment from the crypto industry, and promote responsible innovation, financial inclusion, and public education on risks and fraud prevention.
Press secretary Kayla Mamelak Altus confirmed that the office was planned for months, with extensive interviews conducted to fill the executive director role prior to the announcement. This initiative builds on Adams' pro-crypto record, including his acceptance of his first paychecks in Bitcoin and Ethereum in 2022, earning him the nickname "Bitcoin Mayor." Earlier in May, Adams launched a digital assets advisory and called for an end to New York's strict BitLicense regulations. Adams will leave office in January 2026 after ending his reelection campaign in late September.
