AI biodefense startup Valthos has launched with a $30 million funding round led by OpenAI Startup Fund, Founders Fund, and Lux Capital. The company, founded by Kathleen McMahon, Tess van Stekelenburg, and Victor Mao, focuses on developing AI-powered tools for real-time detection and response to biological threats, aiming to reduce threat response times from months to hours.
Kathleen McMahon, co-founder and CEO, emphasized the urgency, stating, "In this new world, the only way forward is to be faster. So we set out to build the tech stack for biodefense." Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer at OpenAI, highlighted the strategic importance, noting, "This is our first biosecurity investment and we are committed to more in the future."
The funding underscores growing institutional interest in AI for biosecurity, with Valthos leveraging expertise in AI, life sciences, and defense to address engineered biological threats. However, the initiative maintains traditional biotech and AI roots, with no direct impact on cryptocurrency or blockchain markets observed.
