MoviePass, the company formerly known for unlimited movie theater subscriptions, has unveiled Mogul, a platform that merges prediction markets and fantasy leagues centered on the film industry. The service entered public beta, enabling users to create "teams" of movies, actors, and directors, with performance measured by box office results and cultural impact.
Users assemble teams using internal credits, which are purchased with stablecoins, hinting at future integrations for real-money betting. Participants compete for a $100,000 prize pool, and the credit system allows for transparent activity tracking and scalable gamification. Additionally, users can engage in daily polls on Hollywood trends, such as potential film remakes.
MoviePass CEO Stacy Spikes emphasized that "prediction markets are growing rapidly and could become the next trillion-dollar digital economy," positioning Mogul as the first fantasy entertainment market to turn passive viewers into active participants.
The platform received financial backing from Animoca Brands, which led MoviePass's seed funding round in 2023 and explored technologies like virtual reality in cinemas. MoviePass also partnered with the Sui Foundation in 2024 to facilitate subscription payments using stablecoins, replacing its earlier unlimited model with a credit-based system aligned with the crypto economy. The company plans to introduce real-money gaming in the future, further integrating entertainment with digital assets.
