Social media platform X has quietly rolled out a new manipulated media label that automatically flags posts containing doctored images or videos designed to deceive users. The label appears directly beneath such posts, and users attempting to share them receive a warning prompt linking to X's policy on authenticity and deceptive media, published in April.

This update coincides with increased pressure on social platforms to address election-related misinformation. X recently released its first formal transparency report since Elon Musk's acquisition, revealing 5.3 million account suspensions and 10.7 million posts removed or labeled for violations like child sexual exploitation and harassment in the first half of the year. Despite criticism from advocacy groups over slow action, Musk has defended X's transparency, highlighting the Community Notes feature as an effective user-driven fact-checking system.

Alongside the media labels, X introduced account transparency features displaying user location, creation date, and username change history. X Head of Product Nikita Bier described this as an important first step to securing the integrity of the global town square, with privacy safeguards for users in restrictive regions. However, the rollout faced rough edges, with some data under review and accounts deleted after location inconsistencies were exposed, such as the ULTRAMAGA TRUMP2028 account falsely claiming DC origins.
