The decentralized identity and data infrastructure project Ontology (ONT) has formally unveiled a comprehensive strategic roadmap extending into 2026, signaling a significant evolution for the network. The plan shifts focus from foundational infrastructure to product integration and tangible value creation, ambitiously aiming to fuse data sovereignty with artificial intelligence (AI).
Central to the 2026 strategy is the consolidation of Ontology's diverse product suite into the flagship ONTO Wallet. Functionalities from Orange Protocol (reputation) and Ontello (privacy) are being incorporated into ONTO, joining the existing ONT ID identity layer. This transforms ONTO Wallet from a crypto wallet into a unified interface for managing identity, credentials, reputation, and privacy, and ultimately a data monetization engine.
The roadmap positions Ontology at the critical intersection of blockchain and AI. Verified, user-consented data from the ONTO ecosystem will serve as training sets for AI models, addressing demand for high-quality, provenance-verified human data. The native ONT and ONG tokens are set to gain additional utility through micro-payments for decentralized AI agents and services, expanding beyond simple transaction fees.
Simultaneously, Ontology is upgrading its core identity infrastructure, specifically targeting the burgeoning market for real-world asset (RWA) tokenization. The upgraded Decentralised Identifier (DID) and Verifiable Credential (VC) infrastructure aims to meet the stringent requirements for robust, verifiable, and compliant digital identities needed for RWAs.
This strategic pivot is built on a foundation of recent technical and economic optimizations. Following a landmark 2024 tokenomics reform that permanently capped the total supply of its utility token, Ontology Gas (ONG) at 800 million by burning 200 million tokens, the community took further action in January 2025 (or 2026 per one source). A governance vote implemented a protocol update that successfully slashed on-chain gas fees by 80%, creating a leaner, more cost-effective network to encourage usage.
Technically, Ontology will continue optimizing its EVM-compatible chain through selective integration of Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) to ensure seamless interoperability. The project also plans to lower the barrier to entry for self-run validator nodes to encourage a more diverse and resilient network.
At its core, the roadmap reinforces Ontology's commitment to the principle of data sovereignty—empowering individuals and enterprises with complete control over their digital information. The project is building infrastructure to enable users to control data access, earn from its value, and bypass traditional data exploitation models, fostering a more user-centric future for the internet and AI.
