The U.S. Department of the Treasury has officially launched its "Trump Accounts" initiative, a landmark government savings program, by appointing Bank of New York Mellon (BNY Mellon) as its federal financial agent and partnering with the fintech platform Robinhood. The program, created under legislation signed by President Donald Trump on July 4, 2025, provides a $1,000 government-funded account, invested in low-fee index funds, to every American child born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028.
Under the agreement, BNY Mellon will manage the back-end account infrastructure, while Robinhood will serve as the brokerage and initial trustee, designing and building a custom, white-label mobile application for the Treasury. "Our task is clear: to provide the next generation of Americans with a world-class, intuitive platform to jumpstart their financial future," said Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev. The Treasury will retain full control over the app and the initial accounts.
The program has already seen significant early uptake, with the Internal Revenue Service reporting that 4 million families have signed up. Tens of millions of children are expected to be eligible. Accounts grow tax-free and are conservatively invested initially in index funds composed mostly of American stocks, with fees of 0.1% or less. Parents act as custodians, and within a year, families can transfer their accounts to other financial institutions.
For Robinhood, this partnership represents a strategic shift beyond its trading platform roots toward broader wealth management. The company's deep integration of cryptocurrency trading, ownership of the Bitstamp exchange, and work on tokenization position it as a potential future gateway for digital assets. While cryptocurrency plays no direct role in the accounts currently, the program could serve as a massive client-acquisition engine. As account holders turn 18, their savings vehicles begin following individual retirement account (IRA) tax rules, potentially opening the door for future crypto exposure if regulations evolve.
