Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced the company has begun testing AI agents integrated directly into Slack and email, positioning them as collaborative teammates rather than simple tools. In a post on X, Armstrong revealed the deployment of two initial agents, named 'Fred' and 'Balaji,' modeled after former executives Fred Ehrsam and Balaji Srinivasan, respectively.
The 'Fred' agent is designed as a "strategic executive agent," assisting employees with strategic clarity, priority alignment, and providing executive-level feedback on documents and early-stage ideas. Conversely, 'Balaji' is described as an "agent of chaos and creativity," tasked with challenging assumptions and helping staff think outside the box to spark innovation.
Armstrong emphasized the company's vision for widespread adoption, stating, "Soon, it will be easy for any employee to spin up a new agent for themselves or their team. I suspect we will have more agents than human employees at some point soon." This move is part of Coinbase's broader initiative to transform its workforce of over 4,000 into "AI-Natives." Armstrong has previously stated a goal for more than 50% of the company's code to be written by AI.
The development aligns with a significant industry trend where major tech companies are increasingly relying on AI, often accompanied by workforce reductions. Armstrong indicated these agents are not intended to remain as "digital twins" of past executives but will evolve into a new, distinct layer of internal labor.
This internal automation effort builds upon Coinbase's previous work in the agentic AI space, including the launch of the x402 protocol for agentic AI payments on crypto and fiat rails in May 2025. The news reflects a growing industry belief, echoed by figures like Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire and former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, that AI agents will become dominant users of blockchain payments in the coming years.
