Key takeaways:

  • European AI regulatory scrutiny could accelerate, potentially impacting tech-focused crypto projects reliant on US cloud infrastructure.
  • The AWS-Anthropic deal signals intensified competition for compute resources, a critical input for AI-driven blockchain networks.
  • Nagel's warning highlights systemic risk, where AI-powered exploits could target DeFi protocols before traditional finance.

Germany's central bank president, Joachim Nagel, has issued a stark warning about the potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities posed by advanced AI models, specifically citing Anthropic's 'Mythos' model. Speaking in Rome, Nagel, who is also a member of the European Central Bank Governing Council, argued that such powerful technology should not remain exclusively in the hands of a small group of large US companies.

Nagel emphasized that European financial institutions must be granted access to test these models to properly assess both their benefits and dangers. He framed the issue as a matter of financial stability, stating, "The use of AI in the financial sector opens the door to new and sophisticated cyber risks, since autonomous AI agents could exhibit harmful behaviour. Early identification and mitigation of such risks are crucial." He described Mythos as a model capable of quickly finding and exploiting security holes in bank software, noting its dual-use nature for both defense and attack.

The Bundesbank president highlighted Europe's lag in the global AI race, pointing out that in 2024, US institutions built 40 "advanced" AI models, China made 15, while Europe produced only 3. He also cited investment disparities, with private AI investment in the US at $109.1 billion, compared to $19.4 billion in Europe.

This warning comes alongside a landmark $100 billion agreement between Anthropic and Amazon Web Services (AWS). The decade-long deal secures Anthropic access to up to 5 gigawatts of computing capacity for training and deploying its Claude AI models on Amazon's custom Trainium and Graviton chips. As part of the deepened collaboration, Amazon has made an immediate $5 billion investment in Anthropic, with potential for up to $20 billion more based on commercial milestones.

Anthropic stated that major Trainium2 capacity is coming online in Q2 2026, with scaled Trainium3 capacity expected later this year. The company, which reports over 100,000 customers using Claude on Amazon Bedrock, will use the infrastructure to serve its growing customer base in Asia and Europe. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the commitment "reflects the progress we've made together on custom silicon."
