Elon Musk confirmed that xAI will be dissolved as a standalone company and fully integrated into SpaceX under a new structure called SpaceXAI. The move consolidates Musk’s artificial intelligence, social media, and aerospace ventures into a single entity, with products like Grok now operating under SpaceX management. The restructuring follows an all-stock acquisition earlier this year that valued SpaceX at approximately $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion, creating a combined entity worth roughly $1.25 trillion.
In a surprise twist, SpaceXAI announced a compute partnership with Anthropic, providing the AI startup access to the Colossus 1 supercomputer cluster originally built for xAI. The facility in Memphis, Tennessee houses over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs (including H100, H200, and GB200 chips) and delivers 300 megawatts of compute capacity. Anthropic will use the infrastructure to expand Claude Code usage limits and support new features unveiled at its developer conference, including a “dreaming” function that allows Claude to learn autonomously between sessions.
Musk stated that after meeting with Anthropic executives, he was convinced the company was committed to keeping its AI “good for humanity.” He warned, however, that SpaceXAI retains the right to reclaim compute capacity if Anthropic’s systems ever pose a risk. The deal marks a significant strategic shift, as top AI firms rarely lease infrastructure to direct competitors. It also hints at SpaceX’s broader ambitions to monetize its data center assets, potentially generating a new revenue stream ahead of a future public offering.
Analysts see the consolidation as part of Musk’s plan to vertically integrate AI, energy, social media distribution, and space-based computing. SpaceX is already developing orbital AI data centers powered by Starship and solar energy, aiming to bypass terrestrial constraints on electricity and cooling. The restructuring is also seen as a response to intensifying competition with OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic for compute resources, GPUs, and data center capacity.
