Agentic AI payments are gaining real-world traction as Travala, the Binance-backed travel booking platform, launches an AI-driven protocol on Base, while Coinbase's x402 standard marks a major milestone.
On June 4, 2026, Singapore-based Travala announced the Travala Travel MCP, an end-to-end agentic AI travel protocol that lets autonomous software agents search, reserve, and settle hotel payments—without human intervention until final authorization. Built on the Base Layer 2 network, the protocol integrates the x402 open payments standard developed by Coinbase, enabling instant stablecoin payments directly over the internet for APIs and applications.
Travala's system allows gasless USDC transactions with near-instant settlement and transaction costs as low as $0.01 per booking. The AI travel concierge operates within a single chat thread in Claude, maintaining context for searches, bookings, and cancellations. Security is handled via ERC-7715 session keys, ensuring final signing authority remains with the user, while ERC-8004 adds a machine-verifiable trust layer for performance tracking. The AVA token continues as the native asset in Travala's loyalty framework, and the company plans to expand to flights and other verticals. To incentivize developer adoption, a 10% rebate in cbBTC is offered for integrating AI agents with the protocol.
Meanwhile, a new Chainalysis report reveals that Coinbase's x402 protocol has now processed over 100 million transactions on Base within its first three quarters. The milestone signals a shift from speculative testing to real economic activity. The share of transfers above $1 has surged from 49% to 95% of value moved, while sub-$1 transactions plummeted from 46% to 4%. User retention has improved fourfold over six months, and x402 wallets hold a greater variety of tokens and larger balances than typical Base users.
Although the initial spike was fueled by the PING memecoin experiment, sustained high volume suggests that agentic payments are moving beyond proof-of-concept. As Travala's integration shows, AI agents are beginning to transact autonomously in the crypto economy, positioning the x402 protocol as one of the first real-world-scale platforms for AI-powered commerce on the blockchain.
