Galaxy Digital, the cryptocurrency financial services firm led by Mike Novogratz, has announced the Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, investing up to $5 million to research and prepare for the threat of quantum computing to Bitcoin's cryptographic security. The initiative funds post-quantum cryptography research, establishes an expert advisory board, and aims to coordinate ecosystem-wide efforts among developers, miners, exchanges, and academics.
The core concern is the so-called Q-Day—the moment when a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could break Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). This would allow attackers to derive private keys from public keys, potentially stealing Bitcoin from any address that has ever broadcast a transaction. Galaxy Digital stresses that collaborative preparation is essential to upgrade to quantum-resistant standards before such a computer exists.
Analysis from quantum-resilience specialist Project Eleven indicates that a cryptographically significant quantum computer could appear as early as 2030. Moreover, approximately 6.9 million Bitcoin (worth hundreds of billions of dollars) are already held in addresses vulnerable to quantum attacks—those that have reused addresses or exposed public keys. This represents a significant portion of the total supply, making the timeline urgent.
While the risk is not immediate for individual holders, the long-term security of Bitcoin depends on proactive measures. If quantum progress outpaces preparation, it could trigger a crisis of confidence. The initiative also sets a precedent for the broader blockchain industry, as other networks relying on similar ECC face identical vulnerabilities. Galaxy Digital's move may spur further institutional investment in quantum readiness, shifting the conversation from theory to action.
