Microsoft has signed a multibillion-dollar agreement with French AI startup Mistral AI to dramatically expand their partnership, focusing on building out AI infrastructure across Europe. The deal, announced on July 21, 2026, will see Microsoft tap into Mistral’s European data centers equipped with thousands of NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs, boosting capacity for cloud and AI services. Importantly, no new equity stake is involved — the spending will flow entirely toward AI compute and capacity.
Strategic AI model integration is a key component. Mistral’s Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 models are now available in Microsoft Foundry, while Medium 3.5 is also integrated into Copilot Studio. This allows developers to build and customize AI applications directly within Microsoft’s ecosystem. The partnership specifically targets regulated industries such as financial services, healthcare, and manufacturing — sectors where data sovereignty and compliance are paramount. Through Azure and Azure Local, organizations can deploy Mistral models across cloud, cloud-connected, and even fully disconnected environments, ensuring continuous and assured access.
Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith emphasized the deal’s practical value: “Europe should have access to the world’s most capable AI without compromising control over their data, operations or digital future.” Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch noted that the collaboration puts frontier AI in the hands of organizations while letting them retain control of their technology stack.
The two companies will also run a joint go-to-market push, funding proof-of-concepts, offering Azure credits, and holding workshops to accelerate enterprise adoption across Europe and globally. The announcement comes as MSFT stock trades around $402, with GuruFocus estimating it to be approximately 28.8% below its intrinsic value of $565.15, though insider selling of $10.5 million over the past three months warrants attention.
