A senior executive at global asset manager Franklin Templeton has identified autonomous AI agents as a transformative force for blockchain adoption, just as a consortium of crypto projects unveiled a direct connection between artificial intelligence and physical robots through onchain payments. Sandy Kaul, head of innovation at the $1.5 trillion firm, predicted that the rise of AI agents — software programs that perform tasks, make decisions, and execute transactions without human intervention — would create a machine-to-machine economy requiring vast numbers of instant micropayments.
Kaul argued that existing card networks are burdened by high fees and slow settlement, making them unsuitable for such high-frequency, low-value transactions. Instead, she highlighted Aptos (APT), Solana (SOL), and BNB Chain as blockchains well‑positioned to support this use case thanks to their speed, low cost, and scalability. Her analysis adds significant institutional weight to the growing thesis that blockchain’s true killer app may lie in serving automated agent‑to‑agent commerce rather than traditional person‑to‑person transfers.
Simultaneously, the Fabric Foundation introduced the RoboPay launch partners, an alliance of blockchain projects connecting AI agents to physical robots. Among them, Aethir’s Claw platform lets developers deploy AI agents with one‑click browser hosting on decentralized infrastructure, while AEON provides an onchain payment and settlement layer that now extends from merchants to robots. This means an AI agent can directly pay a robot to perform a task in the real world, with the transaction settled cryptographically. Other partners include Kite AI, which issues verifiable digital identities and spending authority for agents; Peaq, which gives machines wallets and reputation scores; FLock, which crowdsources robot training; PrismaX, which verifies completed work; and Unibase, which supplies decentralized memory and interoperability. Together, these projects aim to build what the industry calls the machine economy — a future where robots and AI agents transact autonomously through blockchain rails.
The convergence of these two announcements signals that the infrastructure for an agent‑driven economy is already being assembled, with major blockchains and dedicated Web3 projects positioning themselves as the financial backbone for an age of intelligent automation.
