Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced a suite of new AI features on July 23, 2026, designed to enhance user engagement and trading efficiency through agentic technologies. The rollout includes three core products: an AI agent checkout for USDC payments via Coinbase Business, a real-time agent trading view with plain‑English rule execution, and a developer SDK that adds agent payment acceptance to APIs, MCP servers, or web services in just three lines of code.
The merchant‑facing piece uses the x402 payment standard, incubated by Coinbase, with instant and irreversible USDC settlement through Coinbase Payments. Coinbase Business customers automatically gain the ability to receive agent‑initiated purchases without additional integration. Sid Coelho‑Prabhu, head of Coinbase Business, framed the move as recreating familiar payment infrastructure for a new online agentic economy.
On the trading side, Coinbase expanded its Model Context Protocol product—launched last month—to give exchange users a live feed of an AI agent’s open orders, with the ability to set conditional rules such as “buy ETH if it dips 5%.” Agents tap the same WebSocket market feed used by institutional desks. Security measures isolate agents’ portfolios from a user’s main balance and impose caps on spending, trade size, and accessible services.
The push comes as agent visits to Base’s developer documentation surpassed human visits for the first time last month. Coinbase’s head of AI product, Lincoln Murr, noted that the x402 protocol had already processed 75 million transactions and $24 million in volume over the prior 30 days. The initiative positions Coinbase to capture demand from automated shoppers and reinforces its strategy to blend AI with crypto commerce.
