Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has publicly endorsed the push for open-weight artificial intelligence models, responding to NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang’s inaugural post on X. Huang’s debut tweet shared an open letter titled “Open Weights and American AI Leadership,” co-signed by major technology players including Meta, Microsoft, and IBM. The letter positions open-weight models as essential for broadening AI access, fostering competition, and securing U.S. technological dominance.
Armstrong voiced his support, stating that Coinbase is already migrating more workloads toward open-weight systems. He predicted that such models could surpass closed frontier models in enterprise settings, especially when fine-tuned on proprietary data. “A fine-tuned model that has seen 100,000 of our compliance cases internally could be a better specialist than any frontier model on its own,” Armstrong wrote. He added that open-weight models “may actually outperform frontier models inside companies.”
The open letter drew comparisons to the open-source software movement of the 1980s, arguing that open AI models could lay a similar foundation for innovation while acknowledging risks of misuse. However, it maintained that openness ultimately enhances safety by enabling broader scrutiny and security research. The initiative garnered backing from other prominent figures, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk—who said “This has my full support. Jensen is right”—OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Block founder Jack Dorsey.
