Kenya has taken a major step against certificate fraud by migrating its national academic credentials to a blockchain-based verification system powered by Avalanche. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) built the platform in partnership with a local provider, leveraging the Avalanche C-Chain to anchor historical and current examination records.
The project initially covers more than 15 million records and is expected to scale to approximately 35 million as it encompasses documents dating back to 1989. Nearly one million KCSE 2025 certificates are now available exclusively through the secure digital portal, allowing candidates to access, download, and verify their documents online.
Employers, universities, and schools can now confirm qualifications within seconds rather than enduring months of manual checks. Traditional verification processes often required written requests, offline files, and lengthy administrative reviews, creating openings for counterfeit certificates and fake websites. By linking each credential to a permanent, tamper-proof blockchain entry, the system shifts trust from institutional approval to direct cryptographic proof.
This rollout extends Avalanche’s public-sector footprint, following similar blockchain-based record-keeping initiatives such as India’s digitization of 700,000 land records via LegitDoc, California’s vehicle title project, and Bergen County’s property deed tokenization. Kenya now adds academic credentials to this growing list of government applications, signaling broader adoption of blockchain infrastructure for public services.
