SpaceX has officially partnered with NVIDIA to supply the compute payload for its ambitious Starmind project — a proposed constellation of orbital data centers designed to run artificial intelligence workloads directly in space. The agreement was announced on August 4, 2026, and will see each Starmind AI1 satellite equipped with NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform, combining Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs in a package optimized for the power and thermal constraints of orbit.
Under the plan, the satellites would form a high‑bandwidth network interconnected by optical laser links, capable of distributed AI processing before beaming results back to Earth via Starlink infrastructure. SpaceX has filed an application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) seeking permission to launch and operate up to one million non‑geostationary satellites at altitudes between 500 and 2,000 kilometers. The FCC has accepted the application for public comment but has not granted final approval, meaning the project still faces regulatory hurdles related to orbital congestion, collision risk, and interference with astronomy.
NVIDIA says its Space‑1 Vera Rubin module can provide up to 25 times the AI compute of an H100 GPU, while each Starmind satellite is expected to deliver about 120 kilowatts of sustained AI computing capacity, peaking at 150 kilowatts. The use of large solar arrays and liquid radiators that dissipate heat directly into space could give orbital data centers a long‑term advantage over terrestrial ones struggling with energy and cooling demands.
The partnership expands NVIDIA’s footprint in the emerging “space computing” market, adding SpaceX to an initial list of collaborators that includes Aetherflux, Axiom Space, and Planet Labs. For SpaceX, the deal locks in a hardware path for its AI strategy after a challenging period for its stock. Following the announcement, SPCX shares jumped 9.43% to $125.33 during regular trading, though they reversed in after‑hours as investors assessed the costs. NVIDIA shares rose 3.03% to $212.91, reflecting optimism that orbital AI could open another major market for its chips.
