A fresh wave of debate over whether Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin could render XRP obsolete has been met with a detailed rebuttal from Jake Claver, chairman of Digital Ascension Group. In a widely circulated thread on X, Claver argued that the two assets fulfill fundamentally different roles on the XRP Ledger, comparing the network to an airline hub-and-spoke system. RLUSD serves as a digital dollar—stable, compliant, and ideal for dollar-denominated settlements—while XRP acts as a neutral bridge asset that can connect any two currencies or tokenized assets lacking direct liquidity pairs.
Claver pointed to the XRPL's pathfinding mechanism, which can automatically route a payment through XRP if that route offers better pricing. For example, a user sending USD to receive MXN could have the XRP step executed in the background without ever holding the cryptocurrency. This dynamic, he noted, makes XRP a central liquidity hub: where 100 isolated assets would require 4,950 direct trading pairs, using a single hub asset like XRP reduces the needed connections to just 100. RLUSD, by contrast, is designed solely for parity with the U.S. dollar and is backed by reserves—$1.704 billion in reserve funds against $1.595 billion in circulation as of late July 2026, according to Ripple's transparency page.
This clarification has coincided with a flurry of on-chain activity. On August 10, Ripple minted $10 million in RLUSD in a scheduled issuance, executed through the regulated Ripple Mint platform under NYDFS oversight. The minting occurred as Tether simultaneously issued $1 billion in USDT on Tron, but industry observers note the contrast reflects different business models: Tether targets massive retail settlement, while Ripple's RLUSD is issued selectively for specific B2B commercial requests. Meanwhile, XRP whales have accumulated more than 380 million XRP over the past week, defending the psychological $1 support level and signaling confidence ahead of a possible breakout from a prolonged summer consolidation. The combined narrative underscores that RLUSD and XRP are not competitors but complementary tools in an expanding on-chain financial ecosystem.
