The British pound climbed to a two-week high against the Japanese yen in Tuesday trading, but technical resistance at the 50-day simple moving average near 215.50 continues to limit upside, according to BitcoinWorld analysis.
The pair has repeatedly tested the 215.50 area over the past week without a decisive close above it, leaving GBP/JPY range-bound. Immediate support is seen at the 214.00 handle, followed by the 213.50 zone, where the 100-day SMA provides additional backing. A break below these levels could open the door toward the 212.00 psychological mark. Conversely, a close above 215.50 could trigger fresh buying toward 217.00.
The pound’s strength is being driven by divergent monetary policy expectations. The Bank of England has maintained a relatively hawkish stance with elevated interest rates to combat persistent inflation, while the Bank of Japan continues its ultra-loose policy, keeping yields low. This rate differential is attracting yield-seeking investors to the pound and weighing on the yen.
Japan’s fiscal challenges are adding to yen pressure. High public debt levels, among the largest in the developed world, and a lack of a clear fiscal consolidation plan have renewed investor concerns. Political uncertainty has compounded the situation, leaving the yen vulnerable even as global risk sentiment remains fragile.
Traders are watching key levels: 215.50 on the upside and 214.00 on the downside. A decisive break in either direction could set the tone for the next move, with Bank of Japan and Bank of England commentary likely to provide fresh directional cues.
