Metaplanet, a Japanese company that has positioned Bitcoin at the center of its institutional treasury strategy, moved 3,881 BTC worth approximately $247.3 million from wallets tracked by on-chain analytics platform Lookonchain on August 12, 2026.
The transfers occurred over roughly three hours while Bitcoin traded near $63,600. Lookonchain first reported a smaller movement of 1,473 BTC valued at about $93.8 million, then updated total outflows to 3,881 BTC. The amount represents about 9% of Metaplanet’s last officially disclosed treasury balance of 43,000 BTC.
Metaplanet has not confirmed any Bitcoin sale or publicly explained the destination of the funds. According to Lookonchain, the company accumulated its 43,000 BTC at an estimated average price of $96,191 per BTC, and the current market price leaves the position with an estimated unrealized loss of around $1.4 billion, or about 34% below cost. The company previously reported a $725 million first-quarter loss driven by a Bitcoin markdown.
Large wallet movements by institutional Bitcoin holders can attract selling-pressure speculation, especially during weak market conditions. However, Metaplanet has moved large amounts before without selling; in March, on-chain trackers noted 4,986 BTC moved to new wallets after three months of inactivity, with no evidence of disposal. The latest transfer could similarly be a custody arrangement, internal wallet reorganization, or related to Bitcoin-backed financing plans.
Lookonchain also noted that Hut 8 transferred 493 BTC worth about $31.36 million in the same trading window, though neither transfer proves a sale occurred. Metaplanet’s disclosure page contained no August 12 Bitcoin sale notice at the time of reporting.
The company has been expanding Bitcoin-related treasury uses. Metaplanet is studying Bitcoin-backed credit products with JPYC and expanded into securities through its acquisition of Siiibo Securities, which could provide alternatives to an outright sale of its holdings.
