GameStop shares jumped in Monday pre-market trading after the company unexpectedly released preliminary second-quarter results for the period ended August 1, 2026, showing a sharp improvement in profitability even as core retail sales fell year over year.
The company guided Q2 net sales to between $780 million and $800 million. That beat Wall Street's consensus estimate of $756.85 million, but was well below the $972.2 million reported in the same quarter last year. The revenue decline was largely attributed to tough comparisons from the prior year's Nintendo Switch 2 launch, planned store closures and the sale of its France operations.
Operating income is projected at $150 million to $170 million, more than double last year's $66.4 million. Net income is expected to land between $290 million and $310 million, up from $168.6 million a year earlier. A large portion of that improvement came from GameStop's eBay investment: the company converted a previously held eBay derivative position into a direct equity stake and booked roughly $238 million in net gains. As of August 1, GameStop directly held approximately 43.4 million eBay shares with a fair value of about $4.947 billion. Those investment gains were partially offset by an estimated $75 million loss on digital assets and related receivables.
Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities are expected to be $5.05 billion to $5.07 billion, down from $8.694 billion a year earlier, mainly because the company deployed cash to build the eBay stake. GameStop also revised the terms of its planned $1.4 billion convertible-note exchange covering notes due in 2030 and 2032. Under the revised deal, noteholders will receive approximately 55.5 million GameStop shares and $358.4 million in cash instead of the originally all-share structure. The exchange is expected to close around September 3, with about $2.8 billion in convertible notes remaining outstanding after completion.
Despite the positive reaction, analysts remain cautious. GameStop shares are still down more than 30% from their year-to-date high, and the preliminary update reinforces that the company is increasingly operating like an investment vehicle rather than a traditional retailer. One Wall Street analyst rates the stock a Hold with a $13.50 price target, while TipRanks AI gives GME an Outperform score of 71 out of 100 and a $24 price target, although it notes the technical picture remains a Strong Sell and execution risk around the note exchange persists. Full Q2 results are scheduled for September 8, 2026.
