Key takeaways:

  • Ripple's 1B XRP unlock is routine; re-escrow history limits actual market supply impact.
  • XRP's 30.8% monthly gain despite unlock suggests sellers are absorbing supply with confidence.
  • Short liquidations outpacing longs signals traders were positioned bearishly, fueling XRP's upside momentum.

Ripple executed its scheduled September escrow release on Monday, unlocking 1 billion XRP in three separate on-chain transactions, according to Whale Alert. The transactions released 500 million, 400 million, and 100 million XRP from Ripple-controlled escrow accounts.

The move is part of the escrow framework Ripple established in 2017, when it placed 55 billion XRP into time-locked accounts. On August 31, roughly 32.28 billion XRP remained locked in active XRPL escrow objects. After the September 1 release, that balance declined to about 31.28 billion XRP, representing 31.28% of XRP’s fixed 100 billion supply.

Ripple has historically re-escrowed unused portions of each monthly release, so the amount of XRP that actually enters circulation can be much smaller than the 1 billion figure. Around the unlock, XRP traded near $1.39, up about 1.7% over 24 hours and approximately 30.8% over the past month, with a 14.5% gain over 90 days, though it remained lower year-to-date. More than $2.3 million in XRP positions were liquidated in 24 hours, with short liquidations at about $1.5 million and long liquidations near $793,000.
