Coinbase’s reported XRP balance appeared to surge by 4,870.7% after XRPScan completed the identification and labeling of 146 previously unrecognized Coinbase wallets. The jump, which took the exchange’s recorded balance to 5,569,165,957 XRP in an hourly rich-list update, did not reflect any new purchase or transfer of tokens.
XRPScan publicly clarified the situation, stating: Coinbase did not gain 5.5B XRP. We just completed identification and labeling of 146 previously unidentified Coinbase wallets. The updated consolidated balance now stands at 5,683,635,165 XRP, equal to about 5.684% of supply, distributed across 152 accounts.
The reclassification moved Coinbase into third place among identified XRP holders. Ripple remains first with 3,781,131,458 XRP in active balance and another 35,700,000,000 XRP locked in escrow across 26 accounts. Upbit is second with 6,416,060,312 XRP across 12 accounts, while Binance ranks fourth with 2,608,237,482 XRP across 18 accounts. Exchange balances typically combine customer deposits, operational reserves, and liquidity, meaning Coinbase does not necessarily own all XRP held in addresses tied to its platform.
The update is part of an XRPScan data improvement process announced in August 2026, aimed at providing more consolidated and precise rich-list data for the XRP Ledger.
Separately, the XRP Ledger recorded progress on several protocol amendments. The Permission Delegation feature passed an independent review by Cantina Security and completed the network’s quality assurance test suite. The fixCleanup3_3_0 amendment moved closer to mainnet activation, while the Batch amendment reached 71.43% validator consensus, approaching the 80% threshold required for activation.
