Key takeaways:

  • Apple's foldable debut validates the form factor, but near-term sell-off suggests waiting for entry.
  • Long-term targets near $400 reflect structural upgrade cycles, not immediate launch-day momentum.
  • Watch supply chain partners and pre-order data for early signals of durable demand.

Apple Inc. has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, unveiled at a flagship Cupertino event on September 9, 2026. CEO John Ternus described the device as “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,” emphasizing that larger displays open up new possibilities and that Apple wanted to “perfect the experience” rather than simply make a folding phone.

The iPhone Duo opens from a 5.4-inch outer device into a 7.6-inch handset, becoming Apple’s slimmest iPhone when unfolded. It will be available in two finishes, star white and night sky, with pre-orders opening Friday, October 16, and in-store availability starting Friday, October 23. Apple says the outer panel offers around 90% of the usable display area found on the iPhone 18 Pro, while the inner screen is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both Super Retina XDR panels support ProMotion, Always On mode, and up to 3,000 nits of maximum outdoor brightness. The inner display features a nano-textured surface designed to cut glare, reduce reflections, and make the fold line less noticeable.

Apple has re-engineered the foldable form factor with a proprietary dynamic hinge mechanism and custom flexible glass, using more than 100 separate pieces in the hinge, a grade 5 titanium frame, reinforcement ribs, and ceramic-fiber material around the antennas. The front features Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple claims offers triple the scratch resistance of its predecessor, while ceramic shield is used on the back. A special adhesive allows display layers to move independently while bending, reducing pressure around the folding point. Authentication is handled by Touch ID built into the side key, and owners can also unlock the iPhone Duo with an Apple Watch.

Inside, the new A20 Pro chip powers the device, working with a customized vapor chamber, two batteries, and a new cooling system to support consistent performance and full-day usage. Apple has adapted iOS 27 to the foldable design, allowing software layouts to change depending on whether the phone is opened or closed. The external display is intended for single-handed daily tasks, while the larger inner panel supports split-screen workflows, drag-and-drop workspace gestures, and professional applications.

The camera system includes a 48MP Fusion main camera, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, a built-in 2x telephoto option, sensor-shift stabilization, and 4K video at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision. New AI features include Smart Take, which processes scenes on-device and shoots when subjects are positioned correctly; Duo Preview, which lets people see their composition on the external display; and Kid Cue, which places Peanuts animations on the outside screen to draw children’s attention. Apple Pencil with USB-C support will arrive later this year and will work across both screens.

Ternus also positioned the device as privacy-focused, calling the AI system an “intelligent personal hub” and saying that many requests will stay on-device, while tasks requiring outside computing will use protected remote servers. “Others see that data as something to collect and store. Here, not even Apple can access what’s yours,” Ternus said.

Apple’s launch comes roughly seven years after Samsung Electronics began selling foldable smartphones. Wall Street reaction has been mixed in the near term. Michael Khouw of Tidal Financial and Wamsi Mohan of Bank of America Securities had predicted the launch could be a “sell-the-news” event, and that view was proving correct at the time of writing. Longer term, however, analysts remain bullish on Apple, with price targets as high as $400.
