Solana has activated the third stage of its SIMD-0525 slot-time reduction, lowering the target slot time from 300ms to 250ms on Sept. 18 and moving the network to four targeted slots per second. The change went live at epoch 1037 after earlier reductions from 400ms to 350ms and then to 300ms.
The faster clock increases slot production by nearly 17%, but overall processing capacity remains roughly unchanged because per-slot compute and data limits are reduced in proportion. At the 250ms configuration, the compute unit limit falls to 37.5 million from the 60 million baseline used in the proposal. Validator leader windows have shortened from 1.2 seconds to one second, while expected epoch duration drops from about 36 hours to 30 hours.
Applications such as oracle-based markets and automated market makers may benefit from more frequent network updates, and users can see transaction status changes sooner. However, infrastructure providers now must process and store more individual blocks, blockhashes expire sooner in real time, and applications relying on fixed slot durations may need adjustments.
The final planned stage under SIMD-0525 would reduce slot time to 200ms, or five slots per second, cutting epoch duration to roughly 24 hours. No mainnet date has been set. Future progress toward 200ms depends on network behavior, including whether validators maintain acceptable block skip rates under the 250ms setting. The slot-time work is part of the Agave 4.2 rollout and is separate from Transaction V1 and the Alpenglow consensus redesign.
