Vitalik Buterin has reiterated his commitment to privacy as a foundational pillar for Ethereum, rejecting the idea that privacy in crypto is fading. In a recent post on X, he wrote: “It’s only dead if you give up... I’m not giving up on privacy. I’m doubling down.”
The comments arrive as Ethereum developers expand work on privacy across wallets, transaction inclusion, private blockchain queries, and shielded transfers. Buterin has previously described privacy and individual autonomy as central to an ecosystem of “sanctuary technologies,” and he has grouped four essential Ethereum properties under the acronym CROPS: censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security.
Ethereum’s current roadmap separates privacy improvements into three technical areas: private reads, designed to prevent infrastructure providers from seeing what users examine; private writes, which limit what is exposed when users send transactions or interact with applications; and private proving, which supports confidentiality while maintaining verifiability. Among the proposed mechanisms is FOCIL, intended to make it significantly harder for powerful block builders to exclude transactions tied to privacy protocols. Researchers are also evaluating a protocol-level shielded pool for private ETH and ERC-20 transfers.
In May, Buterin outlined a path toward native privacy involving account abstraction, keyed nonces, and access-layer work, and he urged the Ethereum Foundation to focus resources on keeping the network censorship-resistant, private, and secure. Later reviews noted a significant shift from the 2023 roadmap: first-class attention to strong privacy. During a Bankless interview in August 2025, Buterin called privacy “a fundamental part of the original cypherpunk movement,” adding that “Privacy is freedom.”
