Key takeaways:

  • KuCoin's Level 3 upgrade may boost institutional trust, potentially increasing KCS demand and exchange volumes.
  • Enhanced wallet security could pressure rivals to match certifications, improving overall crypto custody standards.
  • Watch KCS volatility as security gains may attract institutions despite cautious market sentiment.

KuCoin, the global cryptocurrency platform serving more than 45 million users across 200+ countries, announced on Sept. 24, 2026, that its Wallet Management Services have been upgraded from CCSS v8.1 Level 2 to CCSS v8.1 Level 3 – Full System Certification. The new certification reflects stronger control maturity in key management, organizational safeguards, incident readiness and auditability.

The upgrade introduces stricter controls across the cryptographic key lifecycle, including generation, storage, access, backup and recovery. Compared with Level 2, KuCoin says Level 3 adds greater separation of responsibilities, more rigorous access and personnel controls, regular testing of key-compromise response procedures, broader independent assurance and continuous backup of operational logs. These measures are designed to reduce single points of failure and improve traceability and resilience.

"Trust is not established through a single certification; it is a system that must be continually tested, validated and improved," said BC Wong, CEO of KuCoin. "Advancing from Level 2 to Level 3 applies more rigorous controls to the people, processes and technologies that safeguard digital assets."

The CCSS certification adds a crypto-native security layer to KuCoin’s broader assurance framework, which already includes SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, ISO/IEC 27701:2019, ISO 22301:2019 and ISO/IEC 42001:2023. For retail users, the upgrade strengthens protection against unauthorized access and operational failures; for institutional clients, it offers independent evidence for security due diligence and counterparty assessments.

The announcement comes amid mixed conditions across crypto markets, where platform security remains a key concern. By advancing its wallet security certification, KuCoin aims to reinforce trust and potentially attract security-conscious retail and institutional users.
