Midnight, the privacy-focused network connected to Cardano, has entered a new phase after enabling permissionless smart contract deployment on mainnet on October 2, 2026. The change arrives roughly six months after its March mainnet launch, which initially used a controlled, federated deployment model focused on stability and security. Developers can now deploy contracts directly to Midnight mainnet without a required security review on the Preprod environment, and applications can deploy contracts on behalf of users. The foundation still recommends Preprod testing as a best practice, but it is no longer a mandatory gate.
The move is intended to unlock broader experimentation in decentralized finance, gaming, privacy tools, and other applications. Midnight has also shifted public infrastructure away from network-operated endpoints: as of October 1, Blockfrost became the primary public provider of Midnight mainnet RPC and indexer services. Google Cloud now provides Midnight testnet infrastructure through its Web3 portal, including a dedicated NIGHT faucet for developers.
Ecosystem additions accompanied the upgrade. Gero Wallet version 2.7.1 added full Midnight dApp support, shielded mainnet balances, and transaction features, including sponsored DUST fees. Ura Labs launched its Relay Club pilot on Preprod on September 8, letting developers sponsor application fees through an API so end users do not need to hold DUST. Noctis Zone tested a token launchpad using DarkVeil, which uses zero-knowledge proofs to enforce buying limits while keeping wallet addresses and purchase amounts private during the first 24 hours of a sale. VIA Labs also completed a cross-chain sprint with 37 developers, recording 12 USDM transfers from Cardano to Midnight and producing five completed payment applications.
The release also includes Midnight Node version 1.0.3, which adds security patches across network environments, addresses an npm reliance alert, removes debugging utilities to protect validator memory, and updates historical block import logic. According to market data, NIGHT rose 13.2% to $0.04874. Its market capitalization increased by 13.28% to $809.47 million, placing it 72nd in CoinMarketCap rankings, while 24-hour trading volume declined 18.16%.
Beyond Midnight, the wider Cardano ecosystem has seen several live integrations. RealFi is now live on Cardano mainnet, bringing the USDrf stablecoin and yield-bearing sUSDrf token onchain, backed by real-world assets including direct lending, Treasury bills, money-market instruments, and floating-rate bonds. The assets have integrations with SundaeSwap and Liqwid. Fireblocks recently announced full support for Cardano Native Tokens. The Cardano Foundation also announced two applications with Brazilian energy giant Petrobras on September 30, covering auditable environmental attribute records for sustainable aviation fuel and traceable records for renewable diesel. These developments do not guarantee ADA price gains, but they indicate that more projects are moving from development environments into live products and infrastructure.
