Key takeaways:

  • Strategy's ATM-funded BTC buying dilutes MSTR holders, signaling reliance on equity markets for accumulation.
  • Holding 4% of BTC supply makes Strategy a systemic crypto-market risk, not just a proxy.
  • Watch MSTR's premium to NAV; falling premium could slow Strategy's BTC accumulation engine.

Strategy extended its bitcoin acquisition streak to three consecutive weeks, purchasing an additional 334 BTC for approximately $28.7 million at an average price of $85,838.80 per bitcoin between Sept. 28 and Oct. 4, according to an 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The purchase pushed Strategy's total bitcoin holdings to a record 848,000 BTC, worth around $73 billion at current prices. The company has spent roughly $64 billion, including fees and expenses, at an average cost of $75,440.70 per BTC. Michael Saylor said the company was "More orange than ever" and reported a $21 billion gain on digital assets in Q3 2026. At current prices around $86,000, Strategy holds nearly $9 billion in unrealized gains.

The latest acquisition was funded through at-the-market sales of Class A common stock and USD cash reserves. Last week, Strategy sold 92,894 MSTR shares for about $15.7 million, with cash holdings covering the remaining $13 million. As of Oct. 4, the company's USD Reserve stood at $4.88 billion and USD Cash at $833.4 million. Strategy also repurchased 1.77 million STRC preferred shares for around $176.3 million, with STRC rebounding to nearly $99.5 from a summer low of $75.

Strategy remains the world's largest corporate bitcoin holder, with its stash equal to more than 4% of bitcoin's 21 million supply cap. According to Bitcoin Treasuries data, 196 public companies have adopted some form of bitcoin treasury strategy, but Strategy far outpaces the rest of the top five corporate holders.
