Ethereum Completes First Atomic L1-to-L2 Transaction on Mainnet

Key takeaways:

  • EEZ demo validates atomic composability thesis, but unaudited status keeps near-term ETH price impact limited.
  • GNO holders should monitor Gnosis EEZ genesis timeline, as delayed ZK proving may cap upside.
  • Fragmented rollup liquidity remains key Ethereum risk; EEZ progress could gradually strengthen ETH's modular narrative.

Ethereum has processed its first atomic Layer 1-to-Layer 2 transaction on mainnet under the Ethereum Economic Zone framework, a technical demonstration carrying 0.001 ETH and coordinating state changes across Ethereum and a connected rollup.

EEZ contributor Eduardo Antuña Díez announced the milestone on Oct. 5, saying atomic synchronous composability had moved beyond theory. The transaction logs show a cross-chain call carrying 0.001 ETH together with a rollup state update. The framework is designed to let a smart contract on a connected rollup call an Ethereum mainnet contract, receive the result, and continue using it in the same transaction. If required conditions are not met, the coordinated execution can roll back.

The Ethereum Economic Zone was introduced in March by Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst and Zisk founder Jordi Baylina with funding from the Ethereum Foundation. It aims to reduce fragmented liquidity across rollups and remove separate bridge steps. Gnosis and Zisk are founding contributors, and the EEZ Association is being set up in Switzerland as open-source infrastructure.

The project remains under development. Its core-protocol repository labels the software an “early-stage implementation” that has not been audited, and interfaces and storage layouts remain subject to change. Gnosis Chain is expected to become one of the first large-scale EEZ rollups after GnosisDAO approved GIP-153 in August with 123,158 GNO votes in support, 115 against and 151 abstaining. The proposal targets genesis for the new Gnosis EEZ setup around December 2026 or January 2027, with users keeping existing addresses, balances and application state. The initial version is expected to support atomic L2-to-L1 calls using an interim proving setup, while full bidirectional composability and real-time zero-knowledge proving are planned later.

Outside developer Jakub Gregus described the demonstration as one of the most important milestones in crypto, though production-scale readiness has not yet been established.
