S&P Global is bringing ratings-style scrutiny to the fast-growing crypto lending vault market, while separately fueling institutional interest in Sky Protocol through credit rating discussions. On October 4, S&P launched its Vault Risk Assessment framework, creating a standardized way to compare the likelihood that investors suffer impairment in lending vaults. The framework arrives as deposits in these products climbed to roughly $10 billion in September, up from $1.5 billion just two years earlier.
The same day, blockchain security firm CertiK flagged suspicious movements involving an unnamed vault on the Coinbase-backed Base network. A newly deployed proxy borrowed about 1,783 aBaswstETH, worth approximately $6 million, from the vault before redeeming the tokens through Aave for around 1,783 wstETH. CertiK noted the incident did not exploit Aave itself, but it underscored a growing risk: investors can be exposed through the contracts, permissions, and managers sitting between their deposits and underlying lending protocols.
That layered exposure is central to S&P’s new framework, which evaluates six areas: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance. The ratings firm said vaults can replicate functions associated with money-market, private-credit, private-equity, and hedge funds, while allowing pooled capital to operate directly on blockchains. S&P’s grades will use a “(v)” suffix, with AAA(v) representing the lowest relative risk category. The assessments are not credit ratings, do not assess expected yields, and do not guarantee capital recovery; they are forward-looking opinions about relative impairment risk.
Meanwhile, Sky Protocol is seeing a surge in institutional interest driven by S&P credit rating discussions. The project’s ecosystem highlighted that S&P’s credit rating supports growing diligence among institutions, a theme amplified by industry commentators. Although Sky Protocol currently shows no trading volume or price movement, the attention could precede future evaluations, partnerships, or funding engagement from major financial players. Traders are watching for changes in volume, sentiment, and institutional announcements as a potential signal of broader market participation.
