Key takeaways:

  • Meanwhile's $37.5M raise signals Bitcoin-denominated insurance becoming institutional wealth-preservation infrastructure, not just a niche experiment.
  • Its 1,183 BTC balance sheet drives structural demand, yet volatility poses solvency and custody risks.
  • Watch BTC Life 1-Pay adoption in Asia and Middle East as high-net-worth accumulation proxy.

Bitcoin life insurance company Meanwhile has raised $37.5 million in fresh funding from existing investors, led by Bain Capital Crypto, bringing its total capital raised above $180 million. The Bermuda-based insurer announced the investment on October 8, saying the new capital will support expansion of its Bitcoin-denominated life insurance products across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Participants in the round included Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. Meanwhile had previously raised an $82 million round in October 2025, co-led by Bain Capital Crypto and Haun Ventures, following a $40 million Series A in April 2025 backed by Framework Ventures and Fulgur Ventures. Sam Altman was among the company's earlier backers.

Meanwhile reported 1,183 BTC in total assets at the end of 2025, up more than fivefold from a year earlier, and 759 BTC in statutory capital and surplus. The company said its net long-term underwriting income for 2026 has already exceeded the total recorded throughout 2025 and is on track to more than double by year-end.

The insurer has signed 15 brokers serving wealthy clients across international financial centers including Switzerland, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the UAE. Partners include Lioner and Apeiron Group. The expansion centers on BTC Life 1-Pay, introduced in early 2026 for high-net-worth clients outside the U.S. The whole life policy requires a single premium paid in Bitcoin and provides a guaranteed death benefit denominated in BTC. Policyholders can borrow up to 90% of the policy's value after the first year without a fixed repayment schedule or margin calls. Meanwhile also offers BTC 10-Pay for U.S. taxpayers, with premiums paid over ten years.

"Wealthy families around the world already hold bitcoin. What they haven't had is a regulated way to pass it on," said Meanwhile co-founder and CEO Zac Townsend. "Brokers came to us because their clients kept asking. This round lets us keep up with them."

Meanwhile received its Class IILT insurance license from the Bermuda Monetary Authority in July 2024 after spending approximately two years in the regulator's insurance innovation sandbox. The company maintains its balance sheet, reserves, and audited financial statements denominated in Bitcoin, while regulated institutional custodians hold policyholder funds.
