Bitcoin traders are showing a clear bullish tilt on margin platforms, but that optimism is now colliding with falling prices and mounting liquidation risks. Data from Bitfinex shows that margin longs reached 89,650 BTC, while the short ratio stood at just 0.168%. That positioning suggests most traders expect higher prices, making it a closely watched sentiment signal in the crypto market.
However, Coinbase Markets highlighted a more fragile picture. The largest cluster of net long Bitcoin positions was entered at an average level of $81,993. With BTC trading below that level, 64% of net long notional was entered above the spot price. As of the latest update, Bitcoin was down about 1.50% over 24 hours to $80,595, extending a broader market selloff earlier in the week.
Liquidation data underscored the pressure on leveraged bulls. Across the crypto market, total liquidations reached $481.25 million, with longs accounting for $346.15 million. Bitcoin-specific liquidations totaled $95.06 million, of which $85.90 million were long positions and $9.16 million were shorts. If Bitcoin continues to fall, forced closures of leveraged long positions could add further selling pressure.
Coinbase also noted that BTC options are pricing a clear downside bias across the volatility curve. The BTC 25-delta skew was reported at 11.3% for 1 day, 10.5% for 1 week, 10.8% for 1 month, and 3.9% for 1 year, meaning puts carry higher implied volatility than comparable calls across every maturity. The key question now, according to Coinbase Markets, is whether traders will add to positions in anticipation of a recovery or reduce exposure to limit further losses.
