Altcoins and tokens stalled in October, failing to deliver the seasonal rally traders had expected from another “Uptober.” According to Cryptorank data, only 8% of the top 100 crypto assets posted net gains last month, a dramatic pullback from September’s 81% positive breadth. The average decline across altcoins and tokens reached roughly 17%, with Ethereum erasing 16.3%, BNB down 8.4%, Solana falling 18.8% and Arbitrum off more than 22%.
The altcoin season index stayed neutral for most of 2026 and has now marked 406 days without a full altcoin season. The longest prior gap was 486 days, a threshold often associated with extended crypto winter conditions. Over the past three months, 82 of the top 100 assets retained gains, but only 46 outperformed Bitcoin, underscoring weak relative momentum.
Even so, there was no deep capitulation: capital rotated toward newly issued assets and tokenized markets rather than exiting entirely. Revenue-sharing tokens such as Hyperliquid (HYPE) and Pump (PUMP) appeared among top gainers, along with periodic outperformers Quant (QNT), Raydium (RAY) and Zcash (ZEC), the latter supported by spot demand and rising derivative open interest.
By early November, the sell-off had pushed more assets into oversold territory: ETH remained neutral while BNB and SOL showed stronger oversold readings. In the wider top 1,000 universe, only 136 assets were positive over the previous 30 days. A Market Vector report noted that small-cap cryptocurrencies outperformed on certain timeframes, but large-cap assets led over longer horizons.
A separate market view suggests the quiet accumulation phase may be ending. Traders are watching XRP, Aptos, Pi Network, Hyperliquid and Sui for possible relative strength if volatility returns. XRP’s outlook is tied to payment infrastructure and institutional use; Aptos and Sui compete for layer-1 developers, applications and liquidity; Pi Network needs adoption to translate into measurable economic activity; and Hyperliquid is exposed to decentralized perpetual futures trading.
The October reversal indicates that traders are no longer rewarding altcoins purely on hype. Market depth, liquidity and revenue-sharing fundamentals are becoming more important filters, even as the broader altcoin recovery remains elusive.
